Outside, a rugged coastline of turbulent waves crashing the diminutive beach. Exhilarating and alive. Inside, two people sitting across a small room, mentally and emotionally miles apart. Silent and stale.

Harold Pinter’s Landscape, one of his shorter one-acts, is just as full of tension and those famous pauses as any of his fuller works. A past middle age couple, given a sumptuous house that they once cared for, now spend their time in their own worlds. The house has become a physical notion of their relationship – a cavern of non-communication, dreaming and resent. Duff attempts to repair an obviously strained relationship with a see-saw litany between regret and mea culpa. Beth chooses to silently lose herself in a one-time sensual, romantic episode. Both are dying for either escape or reassurance in a time long past.

Moira Wilson and Van Quattro play the estranged couple with clear conviction as to their characters’ goals. Quattro’s desperation for communication at the least and forgiveness at the utmost masterfully highlights Wilson’s resilient unresponsiveness and deeper rabbit-holing to Beth’s safe, happy place.

Wingspan Theatre Co.’s Landscape is a nicely woven piece displaying the power of the mind to separate, to torment, to remove and to remember.
